P. V. Madhusudhan Rao is Mehra chair professor in the department of mechanical engineering at IIT Delhi, New Delhi. He is presently the head of department of design. He also serves as head of IDDC (Instrument Design and Development Center). He is a co-founder of Assistech lab in Khosla school of information technology, IIT Delhi which works towards development of assistive technologies for empowerment of visually challenged. As a coordinator of IIT Delhi Design Innovation Center (DIC), he is also responsible for initiating and driving multiple programs in design, innovation & entrepreneurship for students.
He obtained his bachelors in engineering from college of engineering, Osmania university, masters in mechanical engineering from IIT BHU and his Ph.D from IIT Kanpur. He was a guest researcher to US government's National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST), USA multiple times between 1996-2007. He was visiting scientist to MIT during summer 2005 and visiting faculty to Stanford University during 2012.
His current teaching and research interests include product design & manufacturing, computer aided design & manufacturing, design for product life-cycle, and design of medical & assistive devices. He has authored more than 120 research papers in journals and conferences. He serves on editorial boards of journal of computing and information science in engineering published by ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers), journal of smart and sustainable manufacturing systems published by ASTM (American Society of Testing of Materials) and BMJ innovations (BMJ Journals). He has also served on the editorial board of IJMTM (International Journal of Machine Tools & Manufacture) from Elsevier. He has supervised 15 students for Ph.D theses and about 50 students for their masters theses.
He has filed many design registrations and more than a dozen patents many of which have been commercialized. He and his team’s translational research efforts have led to successful products and solutions which are presently in the national and international market and have made an impact. Some of these products are among those selected for display at Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian design museum, National museum of Scotland and Bill & Melinda Gates foundation Discovery Center. He serves in multiple roles as chairman, part-time director and scientific advisor to many new start-ups. He has carried out large number of sponsored research, consulting and innovation projects which were sponsored by DST, MHRD, MeitY, DBT, INAE, BHEL, Government of Ethiopia, Boeing, Wellcome Trust (UK), EPSRC (UK), Omidyar Network, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
He has served on many research and innovation committees of government of India which include DST, DSIR, DBT, CSIR, AICTE, BIRAC, MHRD, MeitY, MSME, NRDC, ministry of social justice and empowerment, Rashtrapati Bhavan and Government of Gujarat. He has delivered more than 50 keynote/plenary/invited lectures and also contributed as a panelist in many panels including those organized by World Economic Forum, UNDP, WHO, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE, UK), CII and National Innovation Foundation. He has also organized and co-organized multiple conferences and events which include Indo-Japan joint workshop on manufacturing (with IIT Kanpur), Inclusive manufacturing forum (with NIAS), India social good summit (with UNDP), National aeromodelling challenge (with Boeing), human powered vehicle challenge (with ASME), capacity building workshop for social entrepreneurs (with Harvard Business School & Tata Trusts), inclusive innovation conference (with Omidyar network), Indo-Russian boot camp for school children (with Niti Aayog) and MIT-IIT innovation boot camp.
He is a recipient of INAE’s Abdul Kalam Technology Innovation National Fellowship. He has been conferred with of 2005 Vasvik Industrial Research Award and has received twice national award by Department of Science & Technology to scientists working on improving accessibility for the disabled. He has won many best paper awards for his research papers in international conferences including ASME/IEEE conference.
