Advanced Flow Characterization  
Dynamics of unary and binary gassolid flows 

Owing to their high heat and masstransport characteristics, gassolid
fluidized beds are widely used for gassolid reactions (e.g. combustion,
gasification, etc.) and catalytic gas phase reactions (e.g. FCC, thermal
cracking etc.). In a gassolid fluidized bed, overall reaction rate,
heat and mass transport between the phases, segregation, mixing, and
eventually the performance of the bed strongly depends on the dynamic characteristics
of the flow. In the present
work, Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) is being used for the
measurement of local solid volume fraction fluctuations of unary and
binary gassolid flows. The fluctuations are used to characterize the dynamics
of the gassolid flows with the help of
statistical tools. In the case of binary gassolid flow, the effect of
particle properties on the dynamics and the characteristics of
segregation and mixing phenomena are being investigated using the ECT
measurements. This work helps to understand the dynamic characteristics of gassolid flow and provides timeresolved measurements for
the validation of two and multifluid CFD models.
