Assignment 5: Society and Environment and LCA from internet and embodied energy of buildings

Part A: Essay on Society and Environment

What are the basic human needs (eating, sleeping, working, mobility, health and fitness, clothing, entertainment, shelter, etc.) that your life is designed around? Please think about how do you spend your time on a daily basis around these needs. Why do you do what you do? Could you do it any better? Please think about it from a health and an environment perspective. You could learn from how these needs are met by others in different parts of the world, rural vs urban, rich vs poor, etc? Please write atleast a 2 page essay on your thoughts about it.

Part B: LCA from internet use and embodied energy of buildings

How much is your yearly carbon footprint from the use of internet? How much is your screen time per day (mobile, laptop, TV, LCD screen/projector in the classroom)? Please comment on how the electronic gadget based screen time is related to environmental and health impact.

How much is your yearly carbon footprint from the embodied energy in a building (all stages of a building life cycle except the use phase)?

Assignment 7: Poster about your carbon footprint

You have computed your annual carbon footprint for your usage of electricity, transport, food, products, internet and embodied energy in buildings through various assignments until now. You have also learnt the LCA of a food item and a product of your choice. You have also reflected on how your carbon footprint can come down. You have also looked at how meeting of basic human needs is related to the environmental and health impact. Can you share a poster in pdf format summarizing your findings and insights from your learnings so far? Make the poster visual and be creative in sharing your insights. Please do share your annual carbon footprint and the break up of that footprint (for each of mobility, shelter, food, products, internet use, etc) in the form of infographics in the poster. Please feel free to make your poster using any software and choose the size that you think would work for your case. This poster can also become a part of your portfolio and could be an easy way to explain your sustainability perspectives to others for jobs/higher studies/society, etc. You can look up different carbon footprint poster templates by using these keywords on google images to get a glimpse of the different visualizations that are possible.
