Assignment 10

Composites

Introduction

Composites are formed by combining materials together to form an overall structure with properties that differ from that of the individual components. The new material may be preferred for many reasons. Common examples include materials which are stronger, lighter, or less expensive when compared to traditional materials.

Composite materials are generally used for buildings, bridges, and structures such as boat hulls, swimming pool panels, racing car bodies, shower stalls, bathtubs, storage tanks, imitation granite and cultured marble sinks and countertops.

Materials Required

The following materials are required for composite making.

1. Epoxy Resin
2. Hardener
3. Weighing Scale
4. Bowl (for mixing)
5. Spatula (for mixing)
6. Wood sheets
7. Cling wrap
8. Materials ( Here natural fibre such as piece of jute sack, Newspaper etc are used.)

Process

Steps to be followed :

1. Two wood sheets was wrapped completely with cling wrap for using on top and base of the composite mix.

2. Epoxy Resin and Hardener was mixed in the ratio 2:1 in a bowl.

3. Here, 100g of epoxy and 50g of hardener was used. After pouring the resin and hardener, it is stirred for 2-3 minutes until the mixture becomes more viscous.

4. On top of the wood sheet, each layer of jute sack piece and newspaper are placed alternatively with the mixture applied on it.
5. 4 layers of materials (jute sack piece ) are placed. Newspaper is placed in between the layers to ensure proper spreading of the epoxy mixture.
6. Again, wood sheet is placed on top the last layer and weight is applied on top for equal transfer.

7. Here, it is placed under a can of ample weight.

8. This arrangement is kept for 24 hours to set.

Result

This is the result of composite making process.

Black sticker is applied on the top of the composite and with the help of laser cutter, a mouse pad was made.

Design file for laser cutting is given below.
