Composites using Epoxy Resin

Introduction.

Epoxy refers to any of the basic components or cured end products of epoxy resins, as well as a colloquial name for the epoxide functional group. Epoxy resins, also known as polyepoxides, are a class of reactive prepolymers and polymers which contain epoxide.


The term epoxy has been widely adapted for many uses beyond its original use for fiber-reinforced polymer composites. Today, epoxy adhesives are sold in local hardware stores, and epoxy resin is used as the binder in countertops or coatings for floors. The myriad uses for epoxy continue to expand, and variants of epoxies are constantly being developed to fit the industries and products they are used in.


Here are some things that epoxy resin is used in:

  1. General-purpose adhesives
  2. Binder in cement and mortars
  3. Rigid foams
  4. Nonskid coatings
  5. Solidifying sandy surfaces in oil drilling
  6. Industrial coatings
  7. Potting and encapsulating media
  8. Fiber-reinforced plastics

Common Fiber Reinforced Epoxy

  1. Filament Winding
  2. Pultrusion
  3. Prepreg and autoclave
  4. Vacuum Infusion

Procedure

I did this assignmet with Sidharth

Step 1:Pour Epoxy in container


Step 2:Mix hardner into Epoxy.


NOTE:Weight of Hardner should be half the weight of Epoxy.


Step 3:Mix the solution for atleast 5 mins


Step 4:Take a mould (If want to create something with protrusion)In our case we used flat MDF plat and wrapped it with thin plastic foil to avoid adhession between Solution and MDF.


NOTE:One should have knowledge of from what material solution of Epoxy can adhere.


NOTE:We join profile for continuous cutting of a profile.


Step 5:Now put fiber (Joot Sheet) on MDF.


Step 6:Spread Solution on it .



Step 7:Repeat the process until required no of layers .


Step 8:Place the work under high pressure so that it can take shape of mould or.


Step 9:Leave it to dry for 24 to 48 hours.


Step 10:Remove it from mould.


Step 11:Finish it as required.
