Assignment 5

Hand and Power Tools

Health and Safety Practices

  1. Be cautious while working with any tool.
  2. Make sure you have proper clothes, footwear for working in that environment.
  3. Make sure you using machines with proper care such as fixing wood while cutting.
  4. Take care while working with sharp/pointed tool.
  5. Make sure you wear safety-eye-wear for protection when using tools.
  6. Clean the machine once you completed your work with that.

Brief about Tools

Hand Tools

A hand tool is any tool that is powered by hand rather than a motor.

  1. Dead Blow Hammer: A dead blow hammer is a specialized mallet helpful in minimizing damage to the struck surface and in limiting peak striking force, with minimal elastic rebound from the struck surface.
  2. Claw Hammer: A claw hammer is a tool primarily used for driving nails into, or pulling nails from, some other object.
  3. Hand Saw: It is used to cut pieces of wood into different shapes. This is usually done in order to join the pieces together and carve a wooden object
  4. Coping Saw: coping saw is a type of bow saw used to cut intricate external shapes and interior cut-outs in woodworking or carpentry.
  5. Hand Drill: A hand drill is a fastening tool used to secure screws or bolts.
  6. Nail: A nail is a small object made of metal (or wood, called a tree nail or "trunnel") which is used as a fastener
  7. Screws: A screw is a type of fastener, in some ways similar to a bolt (see Differentiation between bolt and screw below).
  8. Try Square: An implement used to check and mark right angles in constructional work.
  9. Pliers: Pliers are a hand tool used to hold objects firmly, possibly developed from tongs used to handle hot metal in Bronze Age Europe. They are also useful for bending and compressing a wide range of materials.
  10. Nuts: A nut is a type of fastener with a threaded hole. Nuts are almost always used in conjunction with a mating bolt to fasten multiple parts together.
  11. Chissel: A chisel is a tool with a characteristically shaped cutting edge (such that wood chisels have lent part of their name to a particular grind) of blade on its end, for carving or cutting a hard material such as wood, stone, or metal by hand, struck with a mallet, or mechanical power.
  12. Vernier Caliper: The Vernier caliper is an extremely precise measuring instrument; it is used to measure internal and external distances extremely accurately – the error may be as little as 0.05 mm – depending on the make.

Power Tools

A power tool is a tool that is actuated by an additional power source and mechanism other than the solely manual labor used with hand tools.

  1. Chop Saw: A chop saw is a power tool that used to make straight cuts in wood. The size of the blade allows carpenters to cut several thicknesses of wood.
  2. Drills: A drill is a tool primarily used for making round holes or driving fasteners. It is fitted with a bit, either a drill or driver, depending on application, secured by a chuck. Some powered drills also include a hammer function.
  3. Table Saw: A table saw is a woodworking tool, consisting of a circular saw blade, mounted on an arbor, that is driven by an electric motor. The blade protrudes through the top of a table, which provides support for the material, usually wood, being cut.
  4. Miter Saw: The almighty miter saw is a powerful tool designed for making cuts at quite a few different angles. Also known as “compound miter saws”, these work by having a blade mounted to a swing arm that can pivot either right or left to create cuts that are angled.
  5. Planner: The planer is a power tool that helps woodworkers create parallel pieces of wood for various projects. They’re used to make a board of wood that has already been jointed (hence the frequent comparison to jointers) flat into equal end-to-end thickness.
  6. Power Hacksaw: Power hacksaws are used to cut large sizes (sections) of metals such as steel. Cutting diameters of more than 10/15mm is very hard work with a normal hand held hacksaw.
  7. Bench Grinder: A bench grinder is a benchtop type of grinding machine used to drive abrasive wheels. A pedestal grinder is a similar or larger version of grinder that is mounted on a pedestal, which may be bolted to the floor or may sit on rubber feet.
  8. Sander Machine: A sander is a power tool used to smooth surfaces by abrasion with sandpaper. Sanders have a means to attach the sandpaper and a mechanism to move it rapidly contained within a housing with means to hand-hold it or fix it to a workbench.
