Project Title

Smart Home

for smart people

Project

We wanted to make a smart home where we can control many appliances and devices using mobile phones. This idea came up when we were thinking of a device that automatically turn off motor once water is filled in the tank. While exploring that idea we figured out that we can make a prevalent device that can perform everything related to appliances. We searched on that and we found that many people have already done this project so we thought of doing this in a different way. Everybody else uses arduino for directly controlling the electrical circuits. We will not change any of the existing circuit else, we will apply our device above circuits to control the switches that are already present. So instead of manually turning on/off will do it using motors/machinery to make that happen. This makes our device a pretty unique technology but the problem statement is pretty conventional.

Idea sketches

What it will do

Our project idea is to develop a device or an additive to switchboards which will control various electrical devices connected to it. It can be done using a remote or a mobile application in this project we will focus on controlling it through mobile application. We can either use WiFi or bluetooth module.

Who will use it

It is a device which can be used by any households / offices / industry or wherever you use electricity.

Challenges

  1. First of all we need to figure out how many no. of operations can be done using a single motor(gearbox kind of a thing) if not feasible we will move to multiple motors like one for each switch.
  2. Connectivity issues will be there using wifi/bluetooth module.
  3. We will have to design it according to be compatible with most of the circuits which seems a little bit tricky
  4. We will have to design it according to be compatible with most of the circuits which seems a little bit tricky
  5. How will the device hold onto the board
  6. Will it be possible to switch on/off manually after installing the device
  7. Designing the device will also not be easy( to look better in home)

Components

  1. Arduino Uno/nano
  2. About 10 very small motors
  3. Gearbox
  4. Bluetooth/wifi module
  5. Ultrasonic sensors Lots of wires
  6. Breadboard
  7. 3D printing / laser cutting to design frame and the element which will turn the system on/off
  8. Water level indicator

Skills

  1. Programming skills for app and arduino(uC)(embedded)
  2. CAD modelling to design the frame and operational components of the system
  3. 3D printing and Laser cutting
  4. basic knowledge of electrical circuits
