Assignment 2

PROJECT PROPOSAL- Design of a Mirror Clock

	Team- Individual Project

What is it?

A Mirror Clock. The project is a take on designing a new way of viewing time that uses the optical properties of a mirror. The final product will look and function like a regular mirror but will show the time in a pattern of colourful light pointers that seem to be glowing from within the mirror. page 1

Application

Interior design- Because mirrors reflect light, they create an illusion of open space by doubling whatever is in the room, this property is used by interior decorators to make rooms feel larger and more inviting. The idea of the project is to bring this feature in the design of the clock, also to create an interesting way to view time.

Mechanism

A spy mirror is a special silver mirror with a thin coating on one side of a clear, extruded acrylic sheet. The mirror coating has a 15% light transmission. This makes it possible that some vision comes through the sheet. page 1 page 1 Individually controllable LED (WS2812b) will be added to this to create the clock in the process mentioned below-

Skills required

  1. Lazer cutting- Lazer cutting the components of mirror (outer spy mioor, inner base acrylic rod holder, diffused acrylic rods)
  2. Electronics- wiring and electronics setup using ARDUINO, power source and soldering with real time clock
  3. Programming- writing a program for the LEDs to light up in the sequence of the clock to show time
  4. 3D printing case- 3d printing the case and the socket

Stages of setup

The set-up will consist of 5 circles sandwiched in this order – Outermost 2 of spy mirror acrylic (to create the illusion of plane mirror surface) lazer cut to the appropriate size. It will hold 2 sheets of normal acrylic of same size in between that will hold one base acrylic sheet in the middle. The middle acrylic sheet will be cut to create slots that will accommodate acrylic rods The sandwich will be circumscribed by a strip of WS2812b LEDs (144LEDs/m) and fixated by tape. page 1 WS2812b LEDs that are addressable individually will be controlled by the programme created and run in ARDUINO The whole thing will be cased in a 3d printed frame and a socket. The rings will hold by press fit. page 1 Two rings will be clasped on the acrylic sandwich from both sides (holes included for wires), The rings will be fit into the socket and the LEDs will be programmed to glow in the sequence of time. The program will check the time and light up one led for hour and the other for minute page 1 page 1
