1. Project proposal

The inspiration for this project is based on the comfort of an individual especially for an elderly person or a person with inabilty to walk. It is very challenging for an eldery person or a person unable to walk to keep locking/unlocking the door when it is at some distance. With the idea which we are going to use, a person can easily lock/unlock a door without moving from the orignal place with just a click of a button on their phone and hence it is a reasonable solution for the above problem. We will be using a servo motor, HC-05 bluetooth module and an Arduino Uno to construct the said product. The arduino will get it's input using a bluetooth transciever which we will be controlling from our phone . Finally the motor will be pushing or pulling the the latch as per the requirement.

2. Materials used

  1. 1. Microcontroller - Arduino Uno board

  2. 2. HC-05/HC-06 bluetooth module

  3. 3. Servo motor

  4. 4. Breadboard

  5. 5. Resistors - 1k ohm and 2k ohm

  6. 6. Cardboard encasing

  7. 7. Jumper wires

3. Application to control the door latch

The application has been developed in android studio and the UI has been very interactive. The buttons are used to connect to the bluetooth module and to lock/unlock the door. It also shows the previous state of the lock as well.

4. Arduino code

The arduino code had to be such that it must act according to the recieved signal. There also had to be a memory state so that it stores the previous state and when on recieving a signal it gives a proper output i.e. if the memory state is in lock, it unlocks the door and vice versa.

5. Final design

One of the main objectives of this project was to make the product compact so that it can be fitted besides any door latch very easily. We were able to make the product compact and it only needs a protective casing to make it industry ready.

6. Challenges

  1. There were two major challenges that we faced during this project. One being the hardware related issue and other being a software related issue-

  2. 1. The bluetooth module that we used had some problem in it which resulted in signal loss. So whatever input we provided it with gave no result. The reason for that was we needed to change the mac address of the bluetooth in code which we did not know as we were unable to first establish a connection between the bluetooth module.

  3. 2. The other issue came when we provided a signal to the arduino it would work for first few signal but after turning it off and restarting it, it would not work. So later we realised after turning it off it had a memory loss and to overcome it we used a memory state which stored the information from the previous state.
