Overview

In today’s data-driven world, where vast amounts of information are generated every second, it is crucial for professionals to have a solid foundation in handling and analyzing data efficiently and effectively. This years edition of the course “Special Topics in Database Systems” will provide an understanding of the emerging field of data systems focusing on big data systems and its associated technologies. The course will also survey important research directions in scalable data management and processing enabling students to stay up-to-date with the the latest advancements in the field.

The course primarily targets graduate students and advanced undergraduate students.

Objectives

  • Familiarize with the fundamentals of big data technologies and their relevance in modern data systems.
  • Explore the different types of big data platforms and frameworks, such as Apache Hadoop, Apache Spark, and NoSQL databases.
  • Introduce students to advanced data processing techniques such as data streaming, graph processing, and machine learning on big data.
  • Attune to major research challenges and recent advancements in scalable data management and processing.
  • Foster critical thinking and analytical skills through paper reviewing assignments and research-oriented discussions.

  • COL362/COL632
  • COL762

These are not “hard” prerequisites. You are welcome to take this course even if you haven’t taken these courses, but you should have some familiarity with materials from these courses. If you are not sure, feel free to get in touch.
