Professional: Soon after submitting my Ph.D. dissertation to IIT Delhi in
March 1997, I started my professional carrier in April 1997 as Scientific Officer ‘C’ at
"Low Temperature Physics (LTP) Lab" of the then "Cryogenics
and Superconductivity" Section (now Free Electron Laser & Utilization Section (FUS)) of the then Centre for
Advanced Technology, Indore (presently, Raja Ramanna Centre of Advanced Technology, RRCAT). At RRCAT, it was a great professional
learning experience while working for a number of research
projects in the area of Experimental Condensed Matter Physics. These
relate to Phase transition in
Superconducting and Magnetic System. I became Scientific Officer-D in February 1999. In my view, my stay at CAT, Indore (of little more than 5 years)
proved to be quite significant professionally. It would be unfair if I do not
acknowledge the highly conducive and professional environment for fundamental
research at LTP lab at CAT. All
thanks to our team efforts! The
team included my fellow colleagues – Drs. Praveen Chaddah,
Sindhunil Barman Roy, Kanwal Jeet Singh, A K
Rajarajan, Maulindu Kumar Chattopadhyay, Megh Mallhar
Manekar.
The support rendered by Cryogenics Lab (Sh. P K Kush and his team)
also deserves special mention here.
It was their remarkable dedication which kept our SQUID Magnetometer
cool continuously for more 365 days some time! In May 2002, I joined my alma-mater IIT Delhi as
Assistant Professor in the Department of
Physics. IIT Delhi is one of the prestigious
academic and technological research Institutes of the world. Continuing with
the research work in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics, IIT Delhi
has given me an opportunity to deliver back, as a faculty member, what I have
learnt in past as a student.
Continuing at Thin Film Laboratory, Department of Physics, IIT Delhi, I became Associate Professor
in October 2006, and later Professor in April, 2011. I must say that at IIT
Delhi, I am enjoying the teaching in addition to research. I am very much
grateful to our first three scholars, namely Drs. Kanwal Preet Bhatti,
Suchitra Rajput and K Gopinadhan, who have
immensely contributed in nucleating the Spintronic Group within Thin Film
Laboratory. I sincerely acknowledge all their efforts and contributions. Present Research Activities: My present
research activities are specifically in the area of Magnetism & Spintronics in
general and growth and investigation of magnetortransport
and spin-pumping properties of the hetreostructures
(e.g., Magnetic tunnel junction(MTJs), etc.)comprising of thin and
ultrathin films of ferromagnets (CoFe, CoFeB, NiFe, Fe3O4, Co, MnAl, MnGe, etc.), Heuslers (Co2FeAl, Co2CrxF1-xeAl;Co2MnAl,
etc.), antiferroagnets (IrMn,
FeMn, Cr, etc.), non-magnetic metals (Ta, W, Pt,
Al, etc.), oxides (MgO, Al2O3, etc.). Such structures
show interesting physical phenomenon, e.g., Exchange Bias (EB) effect,
Giant Magnetoresistance Effect (GMR), Tunnel Magnetoresistance Effect, Spin
Hall Effect (SHE), Anomalous Hall Effect (AHE), etc.. In past, we worked extensively on Ferromagnetic semiconductors for
Spintronic Applications, e.g. transition metal substituted II-VI oxides, such
as ZnO, SnO2, TiO2,
etc, and MgB2 superconductors, etc. With financial support from the Institute and other funding
agencies of Government of India, we have established a number state of art research facilities for synthesizing and
investigating ultra-thin magnetic films and synthetic magnetic
structures/superlattices. In particular, in this
regard, we are equipped with two different Multitarget (4 nos. of 2” dia, confocal) pulsed DC Magnetron Sputtering Systems.
One of them is equipped with High pressure RHEED and cryo-pump, Ion assisted
Ion Beam Sputtering (IAIBS) system equipped with load lock and multi-target
(4 nos. of 6” dia, sequential) feature, a
Dual target (2” dia, confocal) cryo-pumped
pulsed DC-cosputtering load-locked system
and a thermal evaporation vacuum system. The sputtered thin films and heterostructures so-formed are
investigated using an in house Magneto-Optic Kerr-Effect (MOKE) based surface
magnetization (MH), in-plane magnetic field (variable azimuthal orientation)
ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) till about 0.4 Tesla, in-plane (Transverse and
Longitudinal) and out-of-plane Magnetoresistance (MR) till about 1 Tesla,
Temperature dependent DC resistivity (with & w/o magnetic field
~0.3Tesla), Hall Effect and Tunnelling (Current-Voltage (I-V)) measurements
down to 15K capabilities in our thin film lab. The other basic and
specialized characterizations such as XRD for structural, PPMS/SQUID for High
field (±9T) and low temperature (down to 2K) Magnetoresistance, Hall
effect and Magnetization measurements, FESEM, TEM, AFM/MFM, EDX, XPS, etc are
performed using the Institute facilities established either in Central Research
Facilities (CRF) or Nanoscale Research Facilities (NRF). We have
collectively contributed in about 180 research
papers in
International refereed journals, over 70 full
papers in Conference Proceedings and about 170 other
contributions (talks and posters in International and national
conference). Our research work has been cited in about 2000 research articles,
with a h-index
of 24. For further updates, you may like to

Education: My schooling took place largely at Paharganj, New Delhi.
I passed my Secondary and Senior Secondary School Examinations,
respectively in 1983 and 1985 from Nutan
Marathi Senior Secondary School, Paharganj and Govt. Boys Senior Secondary School, Bharat
Nagar , New Delhi. Subsequently, I obtained my B.Sc. (Physics Hons.) degree
from R S S Degree College, Pilkhuwa
of the then Meerut University (now Chaudhary
Charan Singh University, Meerut) in July 1987. Following this, I acquired “One-Year Special Course (Physics)” from Hansraj College
of Delhi University
(Delhi) in July 1988. In July 1988, I moved to Physics Department of Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) to study for my Masters degrees. I acquired my M.Sc. (Physics) and M.Tech. (Solid State Materials) degrees, respectively in
June 1990 and December 1991.
Immediately after this, I worked as Senior Research Fellow (SRF) at IIT
Delhi (January 1992 to March 1997) for my thesis work entitled "Growth and Investigations on YBa2Cu3O7-d
Thin Films Sputtered at Low Pressures". The thesis work was
carried out at Thin Film Laboratory (TFL) of
the Department of Physics at IIT Delhi.
Professors Dinesh K. Pandya
and Subhash C. Kashyap
supervised my thesis work.
The basic
experimental training acquired at Thin Film Laboratory (founded by Prof. K L Chopra) needs special
mention here. Being one of the
richest experimental labs around the world, the lab environment inculcated in
all TFLites a sense of a family. I found TFL to be one of the unique
experimental platforms that is run and maintained mainly by the research
scholars. Including me, every TFL alumnus (I am sure)
remembers that unforgettable era spent while working at TFL. One tends to be very nostalgic thinking
about the time spent there and support provided by the senior scholars of the
time. During my thesis days, I got
a memorable association with several senior and contemporaries. While Kanwal Jeet Singh, Achintya Dhar,
Balvinder Gogia, R V R Murthy, Mandar Ashtikar, Milind Acharya, Yarasi Sripathi, G Sriniwas were
among the senior colleagues, Mahaveer K Jain, Harish C Barshillia,
Sharat Chandra, Veer Singh, Nita Dilawar, Somna Sah, P D Paulson, Rahul Kapil,
T Rajagopalan, Ooman K Vargese,
Maggie, Gyana Ranjan Pattnayak, and Gopal K Mor were
among the contemporaries and junior colleagues). The laboratory continues to be quite rich even today.
Personal: Born in 1968, I belong to a
farmer’s family.
Our ancestral family resides in Pilkhuwa,
a town situated along NH24, about 22 km away from Ghaziabad district of Uttar
Pradesh province of India. While my father Late Sh. Chandra Pal Singh served as
a Teacher (Physics) in several schools of Directorate of Education, Delhi
Government (since 1964) before retiring as Vice Principal in 2003, my mother,
Late Smt. Sumitra Devi dedicated herself completely to the family. She passed
away in October 2003. In 1999, I got married to ‘Geeta Chaudhary’.
A postgraduate in Philosophy (M. Phil.) & Science (M.Sc. in Botany), she
served as Lecturer on adhoc basis for three academic
years at M M H College, Ghaziabad, UP during
1996-1999. Later in 2004, she also acquired graduate degree in Education
(B.Ed.). We are blessed with two
issues. My son ‘Sanskar Tewatia’ (born on August 18, 2000) is
currently pursing Bachelors in Technology in Electronics & Communication
Engineering (ECE) from Shiv Nadar University,
Greater Noida and daughter ‘Priyanshi Chaudhary’ (born on September
6, 2005) study at Delhi Public School,
Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. We reside on the beautiful campus
of the Institute (Currently at: 35, Vikramshila
Apartments, IIT Delhi Campus).
