Research

My research focusses on earth’s climate variability, paleoclimatology and paleoceanography. We use a combination of sedimentological and geochemical methods to investigate climate processes at play in the Earth-climate system in response to the past changes in sea surface temperatures (SSTs), salinity and ocean circulation. In particular, much of the research has focused on understanding the patterns and mechanisms of past monsoon dynamics and the associated changes in tropical atmospheric-ocean circulation in South Asia; changes in hydrology and effects on ancient societies; impact of changes in the westerlies on Mediterranean anoxia in the past; and the South American Summer monsoon variability and associated Amazon river runoff. To do so, my work involves stable isotopic and trace metal geochemistry of carbonate (e.g. foraminifera, ostracods, gastropods) from lacustrine and marine sedimentary archives.

Research topics

  1. Studying tropical and subtropical climate dynamics, past and future (including Indian summer monsoon)

  2. Terrestrial climate and hydrology reconstruction after the Last Ice Age and deglacial

  3. Abrupt climate changes and impacts on society

  4. Application and improving geochemical methods to document and understand the evolution of temperatures and hydrological changes over time
