Human body Tissue Testing

Project Title:

Technology Development for collecting Bone & Tissue properties and development of human body FE model

Project Objective:

Tissue and bone properties beyond those already available in literature will be needed for human body FE development. With collaboration with Delhi hospitals, we at IIT can test some samples of human body parts. These samples were available post-surgery from the hospitals. Testing machines to determine constitutive properties of samples in the hospital immediately after the surgery were needed. A set of machines for the testing of human body samples had been designed by IIT and was used in this work. These machines were tested on rubber / viscoelastic and on some animal tissues. Modifications on the basis of the experiences were then done. Also additional machines were designed for different types of tests.

Currently the following tests are being planned:

  1. 3 point quasi-static tests on femur, tibia, fibula and ribs
  2. 3 point dynamic tests on femur, tibia, fibula and ribs
  3. 4 point quasi-static tests on femur, tibia, fibula and ribs
  4. 4 point dynamic tests on femur, tibia, fibula and ribs
