Project Proposal

R&D of a novel video laryngoscope for endotracheal intubation in the patients with reduced mouth opening

Introduction

Laryngoscopy is the most common method for endotracheal intubation, but the chances of success in laryngoscopy are greatly dependent on the clearance in the airway.

Drip & Bottle

Need

  • In India, oral cancer is the third largest cancer, and it causes the airways to become narrower and reduce the mouth opening.
  • There are other conditions too which can make the airway difficult e.g., tobacco consumption, burn contracture neck.
  • Problems with Prior Art

We have many VL available, but they are not customized for Indian patients. Also, these are not suited for patients with reduced mouth opening (less than 2cm).

    Objective

To solve this problem, a blade profile suitable for patients with reduced mouth opening will be designed.

  • First analyze CT scan images of several patients and develop airway profiles.
  • Similar profiles will be clustered in one group using machine learning, and a blade profile will be designed for each group.
  • Once the Blade profile is ready, a whole video laryngoscope will be designed.
  • 3D printing will be used for prototyping, and the electronics will be integrated into the model.
  • testing and redesign- Testing will be done on the mannequin, and once satisfied, we will move on to testing on cadavers.
  • First prototype
