Advanced Batteries Research Laboratory

The Advanced Batteries Research Laboratory (ABRL) is at the forefront of developing high-energy room-temperature Sodium-Sulfur (RT-Na-S) batteries, a promising technology for large-scale, sustainable energy storage. Our research focuses on improving the electrochemical performance, safety, and durability of Na-S systems through innovative materials design, advanced cell engineering, and novel electrolyte formulations. By addressing key challenges such as polysulfide shuttling, dendrite formation, and thermal stability, we aim to unlock the full potential of sodium-sulfur batteries as a cost-effective alternative to lithium-based technologies. With applications ranging from renewable energy integration to grid-scale storage, our work supports the global transition toward cleaner and more reliable energy systems.

ABRL is dedicated to create a resilient energy future while mitigating environmental pollution, which is one of the most crucial challenges facing humanity today. At ABRL, we study new materials to address crucial challenges in energy storage landscape, spanning from high energy density advanced batteries to dual-ion batteries to pseudocapacitors. We also work on the smart sensors for battery applications.

ABRL is located at Department of Energy Science and Engineering, Block 5, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi).
