HUL236 - Introduction to Drama

The Course introduces students to Indian and Greek theories of performance before taking up the modern period. It enlarges the scope of performance to include ritual on the one hand, and social drama on the other. The readings of anthropologists like Victor Turner, Clifford Geertz, Erving Goffman are taken up along with cultural historians like Raymond Williams and Hannah Arendt. Students are given audio-visual material as part of the course learning and are expected to make a team presentation highlighting the distinctive approaches to drama and performance examined in the course. Orson Welles' Othello and documentaries from Indian case material were some of the materials provided to the students.
