Dynamics of unary and binary gas-solid flows |

Owing to their high heat- and mass-transport characteristics, gas-solid
fluidized beds are widely used for gas-solid reactions (e.g. combustion,
gasification, etc.) and catalytic gas phase reactions (e.g. FCC, thermal
cracking etc.). In a gas-solid fluidized bed, overall reaction rate,
heat and mass transport between the phases, segregation, mixing, and
eventually the performance of the bed strongly depends on the dynamic characteristics
of the flow. In the present
work, Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) is being used for the
measurement of local solid volume fraction fluctuations of unary and
binary gas-solid flows. The fluctuations are used to characterize the dynamics
of the gas-solid flows with the help of
statistical tools. In the case of binary gas-solid flow, the effect of
particle properties on the dynamics and the characteristics of
segregation and mixing phenomena are being investigated using the ECT
measurements. This work helps to understand the dynamic characteristics of gas-solid flow and provides time-resolved measurements for
the validation of two- and multi-fluid CFD models.
