Prologue

It is important to get to know one to work together. I am an academic who primarily studies human judgment and decision making (JDM) as a window to understand basic human nature and also passionate about socially relevant topics in India.

Academic Collaborations

I find it fascinating to work with people and colleagues from different countries and cultures connected with academic common interests. I am very open to work on psychology and behavioral economics linked to judgment and decision making at both basic and applied levels. Please feel free to start off a conversation via an email at sm1[AT]hss.iitd.ac.in or sumitava.inbox[AT]gmail.com

Corporate Collaborations

I am happy to work with companies and organisations in various ways but primarily in the following manner: (a) Consultant in ongoing projects, (b) resource person to talk/discuss within your organisation, (c) onboard to do research jointly, (d) co-host and spread the science of decision making. I am relatively more interested in the social space that is connected with societal relevance or domain-specific advancements.

Student applicants

If you are interested to conduct basic research on JDM, then you are welcome. If you have identified an interesting open question that is either socially relevant in India or helps us understand decision making in realistic (or ecological) scenarios, then also you are welcome. This is to say that both basic and applied research in JDM interests me and I also think is important for us to do. I do not work in very wide variety of topics and prefer to be more focused. I am open to people from any institution but would expect some interest in trying to unravel the exciting world of decision making. There are many ways in which we could work together which are explained below. It is useful if you read the same and then contact me.

Short-term students

There is no expectation of prior knowledge. You could join in and work on some existing ongoing work or try to formulate a new research study. If you are theoretical motivated and want to work on foundational topics, consider applying to the Decision Lab group here. If you are interested to think about applying behavioral science and decision research to the theme of water, apply to the Water Thoughts group.

Long-term students

The obvious opening is via the PhD programme entry at the department of HSS at IIT Delhi. Depending on which thread interests you, please start off with an email. I am looking forward to guide PhD theses on the following in the next 1-2 years:

  • Affective mechanisms underlying the outcomes of non-gains and non-losses
  • Evolutionary origins underlying the psychology of gains versus losses
  • Valuation of monetary vs non-monetary outcomes
