This is a masters level introductory course on solid state electronic devices and characterization. In this course, we will first cover basic device physics and discuss in detail various measurement and characterization techniques. This course will be ideal for anyone involved in semiconducting material growth, micro/nanoscale device fabrication and investigations in applications such as photo-voltaics and energy storage. We will introduce various materials used in basic electronic devices and its operational principles. An in-depth treatment of devices such as PN junction diodes, MOS capacitor, MOSFET, solar cells and light emitting diodes will be presented. Characterization is often an extremely important step to qualify the material as well as the device performance. It is a crucial skill set for research as well as industrial job profiles. Different characterization techniques and the governing equations will be discussed in detail. This will aid in developing the basic skills in understanding and designing electronic systems for various modern day applications such as in electric vehicles, high end electronics and quantum enhanced devices.
