Project Proposal:Smart Window System
Initation:
For the course DSL810, initially we thought of two ideas. One was to make a low cost compact braille printer and other was to develop a light control automated window system. As this course mostly focuses on practicing use of sensor and actuators, we decided of going with the second project.
Motivation:
Project idea:
Our project idea is to create a smart window system that can control sunlight passing through it according to the user requirements. Initial features entails:
- Smart control using a remote
- Can sense and maintain room temp within range of 22-30 degrees
- Automatic closure during rain
Future development plan based on time availability:
- Mobile app development for manual control of window system
- Individual control of window units
Approach:
- Step1:Generating sketch and 3D model of the project.
- Step2:Fabrication of individual window unit to the frame as in figure below.
- Step3:Angular rotation of window units controlled using rack and pinion mechanism. The pinion fixed on individual window units and translational motion of rack provided by servo motor. The angular rotation made on servo motor indirectly control the angular turn of window units. The servo motor connected to Arduino UNO.
- Step4:Temperature sensor fixed in the chamber to sense temperature and regulate the window rotation accordingly. Arduino programming will help to control and link these two.
Components required:
Temp. and humidity sensor, gears(pinion), rack, Arduino UNO, wood/cardboard, LCD display
Skills required:
- Fabrication skills
- Programming skill
- UI design skill
- 3D modelling skill(not mandatory)
Foreseen Challenges:
- Connecting temperature sensor output to control the rotation window units.
- Calculation of translation required in rack to have perfect angular control of window units.
- Controlling window opening using mobile app
