FRUGAL INNOVATION "JOYLAB"

Frugal Innovation Lab which we love to simply call JoyLab, is a space of collaboration, co-creation and celebration. Passionate individuals from diverse backgrounds come together here to immersively explore the possibility of creating deep value and beauty through research which is primarily carried out in the field. The broad areas of exploration are Design for Sustainability, Traditional Knowledge Systems and Joyous Self-Discovery. More specifically, research in JoyLab has centred around Ecological Sanitation, Green Housing & Frugal Innovations inspired by Traditional Knowledge. We love to partner with grassroot organisations and individuals who are changemakers at heart and are driven by the values of empathy & diversity, inclusion and creativity.

DOCTORAL STUDENTS

Mrinal Kukreti did his B.Tech in the field of Information Technology followed by Masters in Design from IIT Delhi. His field of expertise is UI/UX Design, and after working for over 8 years in industry with organisations like Microsoft, DEShaw and MakeMyTrip, he has joined PhD as a full time research scholar in CRDT at IIT Delhi in January 2024.

Kyawt has a Master’s degree in Natural Resources Management from the AIT, Thailand. She has more than ten years of work experience in the field of sustainable agriculture and rural development. Kyawt joined CRDT, IIT Delhi as a full-time ASEAN PhD research scholar in July 2021.

Prasannakumaran earned his B.Tech in Agriculture Engineering and Masters in Renewable Energy in 2020. His area of expertise is waste to energy and value addition of agro-industrial wastes. Formerly, he worked as a BIRAC Innovation fellow at IIT Kanpur under the waste to value theme. Prasanna joined the full-time PhD programme at CRDT in January 2022.

Anuja Bhargava, a postgraduate in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, has been actively engaged in the Public Health and Nutrition area for more than a decade with international organisations like UNICEF. She has been a recipient of the Chief Minister's fellowship, Gujarat. She has joined as a part-time PhD scholar in December 2021.

Sanjay Singh holds a Masters degree in Rural Development from Xavier Institute of Social Services, Ranchi. He has more than 15 years of experience working with varied governance structures across national and sub-national governments in South Asia and West Africa. Additionally, he has extensive experience in the design and roll out of disaster risk reduction and mitigation strategies. Sanjay joined as a part-time PhD candidate in July 2021.    

Nivedita Banerjee holds an M.Phil in Pollution Control and a Master's in Environmental Science from BHU. Nivedita is passionate about circular economy and sustainable development. She has work experience of over 10 years and joined the PhD programme at CRDT as a part-time candidate in July 2021.

Ismail Akbani holds a Master's in CAD from VNIT Nagpur and a Diploma in Entrepreneurship from EDII Ahmedabad. He is passionate about design thinking based community interventions for social impact. Ismail teaches at the Symbiosis International University and joined CRDT as a part-time PhD scholar in December 2020.

Namrata Tyagi holds a B.Tech. degree in Biotechnology. She has industrial work experience of over 3 years. Namrata is passionate about ecology centred development. Namrata joined the PhD programme at CRDT as a part-time candidate in December 2019.

Shivani studied Business Economics from Delhi University and received her Master's in Commerce from Jamia Millia Islamia. She enjoys working with communities and creating impact through microenterprises. She joined the full-time PhD programme at CRDT in December 2019.

Chandra Mani Sharma holds an M.Tech in CS from DAVV Indore and has work experience of a decade. He is passionate about interdisciplinary applications of deep learning, computer vision and NLP. Chandra Mani joined the PhD programme at CRDT as a full-time candidate in September 2020.

Kapil Tomar acquired B.Tech. in Information Technology from UPTU and M.Tech. in Computer Engineering from Shobhit University. He has more than 10 years of work experience. Kapil joined the PhD programme at CRDT as a full-time candidate in December 2019.

Parvesh earned his B.Arch. in 2011 and M.Tech. (Construction Management) in 2019. He is pursuing his PhD in the subject “Water-Energy Nexus in Built Environment” at IIT Delhi.

Partha holds a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering, and a double Masters in Environmental Engg. and Industrial Design. Partha is passionate about simple yet powerful solutions.

DOCTORAL ALUMNI

Nalini holds an MBA from Rutgers University and is passionate about studying the impact of ICT usage by rural women entrepreneurs. Her grassroots research was undertaken with women led enterprises across various states of India.

Amruta holds a Bachelor's in Architecture and a Master's in Planning. She is passionate about sustainability and innovations. Her doctoral research is on Sanitation Systems & Circular Economy.

Suneet is a researcher and practitioner with over 20 years experience in resilient design and delivery. He has a Bachelors Degree in Architecture from the TVB School of Habitat Studies and Masters Degree in Development and Emergency Practice from Oxford Brookes University, UK. In 2022, he acquired his PhD from IIT Delhi onClimate Resilience of Social Housing. In various capacities Suneet has led teaching learning processes for senior architecture students for close to a decade, including guiding design thesis in design schools in North India such as School of Planning and Architecture, Gateway College of Architecture and Design, Sushant School of Art and Architecture.Suneet has designed and delivered variety of development and emergency context assignments for UN, IFRC, Save the Children, Oxfam and Sphere. Suneet is an experienced trainer with housing delivery, training and capacity building experiences in post disaster contexts spread across Sri Lanka, Nepal, Philippines, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Suneet has also supported GIZ, UNICEF, Oxfam, Save the Children in India, PRADAN, Unnati on partner capacity assessment, urban sanitation, and school safety through developing technical guidance manuals, behaviour change tools and learning assessment android based app.

Mona , trained as an Architect and Development Planner, has been involved in policy development and practice of safe and sustainable habitat development in South Asia. Through this process, Mona has leveraged research and knowledge based initiatives to inform policy decisions mainly within South Asia. Prior to joining the CDRI, Dr. Anand served as the Country Programme Lead - India for Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC). As part of several working groups of the Government of India, Mona has been extensively involved in strengthening institutional capacities for disaster preparedness, response and recovery that have resulted in progressive policy initiatives for safe and sustainable development. She has also worked with the UNICEF, UNDP, IIT Delhi and the civil society on developing process innovations in this direction. During the course of her journey, she has written books and contributed chapters, articles and papers.

A bio-technologist, Aziz studied and worked on the topics of Ecological Sanitation and Waste Management Systems from 2011-2015.

Sugandh is a trained architect who designed a research framework for design thinking towards green / eco product design.

Naresh is a chemist by profession. During the years 2011-2015, we studied green building materials together, in particular, Bamboo.

Ganesh is a chemist. He conducted scientific analysis of select medicinal plants from an Ayurvedic Perspective.

Sutapa is an Industrial Design professional and designed a values-centered framework for sustainability under my supervision.

Chandrashekhar ,a Mechanical Engineer, studied mechanical properties of Laminated Bamboo Composites his work at IIT Delhi.

Gopinath is a veterinarian and validated ethnoveterinary Medicines for their anthelmintic activity in Sheep.

Charru is now a faculty at Indian Institute of Public Administration. She studied select cases of e-governance.

A Civil Engineer, Ramesh helped design and develop closed-loop waste management systems.
